Do people confuse the terms "racism" and "prejudice?"  Can a person be one and not the other?  Any examples?

In my opinion prejudice can be toward not only race but also religion, homosexuals ect ect ..it is prejudging someone before knowing any facts about the topic at hand. Racism on the other hand is directed directly towards a persons racial background whatever race he/she may be. Racisim is when someone feels superior to someone just because they are of a different race. So in a sense you can possibly be one and not the other. If your opinion should change after getting informed. LIke I said just my opinion.

So, what you are saying is that if an athlete who is black is typically better than his teammates, he's racist?

Lol, well, I'm sorry Rita. But you are saying, if I am not skimming wrong, that racisim is when someone feels superior to someone just because of their race.

Now, to put that in another way, you are implying that a person may think they are superior in some way to another race is racist.

Would this be accurate?

It may be beneficial for you to look up "racism" to get an understanding of the actual word before you deem me ignorant. And its etc., not ect.

Racism is like mongoloid, negroid  caucasoid...and prejudice is not something racial , its mental...racism is physiological difference that can be broadly classified on the basis of physical features...like u "IRREPRESSABLE" belongs to caucasian race..and me.." belonging to "mongoloid" or asian race...

and prejudice is differnt..depending upon mind..mental preference..

I do believe that these are two totally different things.

One can be prejudiced, like "judging a book by the cover".

That doesn't necessarily imply that this person is a racist.

Racism discriminates agains people of other ethnic groups........but racism includes prejudices most of the time but not always.

Oh, and saying a black athlete is typically better than his non-black teammates is of course also some sort of racism, is there such a thing as positive racism???

I just thought expecting MORE from a black athlete than from any one of his teammates might be a positive form of racism, if there is one.

Preferring one race over the other........sort of.

okay so now i wanna add something .... above someone mentioned that someone else was ignorant .... all to often people misuse the word IGNORANCE!!  To be ignorant implies that the individual just did not now better (they lack complete knowledge on the subject) and when reading the word that came to my mind was simple stupidity ....

I believe Martin Luther King stated the best interpretation of the words ignorance and stupidity....

"Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity"

sincere ignorance  -  not knowing better and not trying to learn facts or not blessed to know how to learn information on one's own

conscientious stupidity - is to know the difference and have all the information and still choose to be an asshole!!!

@Just Bee - You understood the point of my question!  Awesome!!

Is there EVER positive racism?  (I do not believe so, but there may be an instance I have not thought of)

Is there EVER positive prejudice?  Can we be prejudice toward something, and it be a good thing?

An example: If a university, in an attempt to better their programs to include more racial diversity, lowers their grade requirements so that more minorities can enroll, is this good?  One would think yes.  Is it prejudice? Yes. It is positive racial discrimination, which is a form of prejudice.

A simpler example: If you are involved in a court case, and you are in the right. Your case is DISMISSED WITH PREJUDICE. This means that they cannot try you again for the same thing.

If your case is DISMISSED WITHOUT PREJUDICE, they can bring the lawsuit to court again.

So, there can be some positivity with prejudice. We think our kid is the cutest one on the stage, because we are prejudice toward our kid...

I really like it when we can think about issues, make sense of them, and determine if something is right or wrong. Using our reasoning skills are truly the only way we can work toward changing the world views, and help eliminate racism and discrimination.

"Ignorance is bliss." rather odd expression but i think its an appropriate one in some cases ,since those who express blissful ignorance have never been singled out as a target for racism or bullying. And to the point isn't racism a form of bullying?
